Why cleaning matters here

Bay air is mild and damp. Units run most of the year.

Heat pumps on the island often heat in winter and cool in the odd hot spell, so they rarely rest. In damp air, the inside of an indoor unit — the coil, the blower wheel, the drain pan — can collect dust, slime and mould that a filter rinse never reaches.

What a deep clean reaches

  • Indoor heads cleaned in place, the room kept dry
  • Outdoor unit checked on the same visit
  • Drains flushed and tested
  • What we found, written down

Questions

About heat pumps, ductless and cleaning.

Why does my ductless unit smell musty?

Usually because dust, slime or mould has built up inside, often on the blower wheel or in the drain pan, where a filter rinse does not reach. A deep clean in place removes it.

How often should a ductless head be deep-cleaned?

It depends on how much it runs, the air it breathes and whether there are pets or cooking nearby. Rinse the filters whenever they look grey; if it smells, drips or blows weakly, it is time for a deep clean.

Can I clean the unit myself?

You can and should rinse the front filters. The coil, blower wheel and drain pan are behind electronics and need the right cleaners, covers and care, so leave those to us.

Do you work on businesses as well as homes?

Yes. Offices, dental and medical clinics, studios, shops and restaurants: ductless heads and cassettes, split and rooftop systems, and maintenance plans.

Does Platinum Layer do coatings or plating?

No. Layer and Studio are part of the business name, not the trade. Platinum Layer does heating, ventilation and air conditioning only.

Which areas do you cover?

Alameda, Oakland including Montclair and Rockridge, Piedmont, Emeryville, Albany and El Cerrito.
